Biparjoy updates: Cyclonic storm made a landfall on Jakhau port in Gujarat coast

More than 12 hours after the severe cyclonic storm Biparjoy made a landfall on Jakhau port in Gujarat coast, Kutch is still reeling under its impact. Government machinery has been activated to assess the damage caused by the cyclone. Communication lines have also been hit in some parts. On Friday morning, the coastal district experienced gusty winds and persistent rains.

As gusty winds and rains wreaked havoc, cyclone Biparjoy has left a trail of destruction, especially in Kutch and parts of Saurashtra region. The cyclone yanked thousands of trees, some centuries-old, left communication towers collapsed, toppled electricity and transmission poles and flattened kutchha houses. Meanwhile, Biparjoy has weakened into cyclonic storm and will weaken further into a deep depression around Friday evening. Several areas of Jalore and Barmer districts in Rajasthan also witnessed heavy rain due to Cyclone Biparjoy, which moved towards the desert state following its landfall in Gujarat.

The intensity of Cyclone Biparjoy has reduced from ‘very severe’ category to ‘severe’ after the storm made landfall in coastal areas of Gujarat on Thursday evening, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
The weather department said that the cyclone has now moved from sea to land and is centred towards Sauarashtra-Kutch, adding that heavy rains are expected in Rajasthan today.
