Mumbai: Team India’s squad for the 2023 Asia Cup in Sri Lanka and Pakistan has been announced on Monday. After meeting with captain Rohit Sharma and Head coach Rahul Dravid, the senior selection committee headed by chief selector Ajit Agarkar announced the squad. Head coach Rahul Dravid was also present during the India squad announced. This was an unprecedented move as historically, the BCCI secretary and chairman of selectors usually address the media.
Ajit Agarkar: “Injuries are part and parcel of the sport. Bumrah and Krishna have worked hard, KL has a niggle but nothing to do with the injury he had. Based on what we’re told, he will be okay soon. Shreyas Iyer is fit and has played three matches at the NCA. We have got a month and half to get them ready and playing.”
Rohit Sharma: “We have a camp in Bangalore and it is happening after a long time to have some skill-based training. It is not just Pakistan, Sri Lanka won the last Asia Cup. We have to prepare for everyone, not just for one team.”
Tilak Varma has earned a maiden ODI call-up while Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul return as India announced a 17-man squad for the 2023 Asia Cup. Spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, meanwhile, has been excluded while Kuldeep Yadav has found a place. Chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar said that while this is not officially a preliminary squad, the team for the World Cup will be selected from among these players. It means that this might as well be the de facto preliminary squad for the World Cup.
