US varsity to award degree posthumously to Indian student killed by police vehicle

International Desk: University of North Texas (UNT) will award a degree posthumously to Indian student Anjali Chhabria who was killed by a police vehicle in January, 23. Chhabria was a Master of Science student in Computer Science at UNT.

On January 2023, Chhabria was walking home from her apartment when she was struck and killed by a police vehicle. The officer involved in the accident was responding to a call about a suspicious person.

The UNT community was deeply saddened by Chhabria’s death. She was a bright and talented student who was passionate about her studies. She was also a kind and caring person who was always willing to help others.

Kandula was set to graduate the coming December with a master’s degree in information systems from the Seattle campus of Northeastern University. Her family said she was working towards supporting her mother in India.

Saddened by Kandula’s death, Kenneth W Henderson, Chancellor of Northeastern University, in a statement issued on the university’s official Facebook page on Friday said, “Her loss will be felt deeply by students, staff and faculty. The university plans to award Jaahnavi her degree posthumously and present it to her family.

“In the days following this tragedy, our Seattle campus community joined together in a vigil of remembrance and solidarity. At the time, our dean Dave Thurman wrote of Jaahnavi’s tremendous engagement, noting that all on our Seattle campus, “loved her bubbly laugh, sense of humour and infectious personality,” the post read.

In honor of Chhabria’s memory, UNT will award her a Master of Science degree in Computer Science posthumously.

Chhabria’s family will accept the degree on her behalf. They have expressed their gratitude to UNT for honoring their daughter’s memory.

Chhabria’s death is a tragic reminder of the dangers that pedestrians face on our roads. It is important to be aware of our surroundings and to take steps to stay safe when walking or biking.

We extend our deepest condolences to Chhabria’s family and friends.
