Three fake gold smugglers including woman held in Hailakandi
Hailakandi: Three people, including a woman, were arrested in Hailakandi district of Assam on Monday for allegedly smuggling fake gold, police said.
The accused were identified as Jamuna Yadav, Ramu Prajapati and Sudama Prajapati. They were arrested from a bus stand in Hailakandi town while they were trying to sell the fake gold to a customer, police said.
On searching their belongings, police recovered 2 kg of fake gold chains. The accused have been booked under the Assam Gold Control Act, 1983, police said.
Police said that the accused were part of a gang that smuggled fake gold from Bangladesh and Bihar and sold it in different parts of Assam. The gang used to target gullible people, especially women, and sell them the fake gold at a lower price than the market rate.
Further investigation is underway.
