Silchar: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday landed in Barak Valley’s Silchar to inaugurate three bridges over Sonai and Barak rivers and lay foundation stone of several other developmental projects in Cachar and Hailakandi district worth more than Rs 750 crore.
The chief minister has announced katigra, barkhla, udarband and sonai as new sub-divisions. Himanta Biswa Sarma also announced that the GC College in Silchar will be given full-fledged university status in the upcoming session of the Assembly.
On his arrival at the Kumbirgram airport in Silchar on Thursday morning, the Chief Minister headed for the Badripar bridge site in Silchar by road and formally inaugurated the Badrighat bridge over the Barak river connecting Barenga and Kashipur and dedicated it to the people.
He then formally inaugurated a magnificent statue in memory of Mahavir Lachit Borphukan at Silchar in Barak Valley. He said the tallest statue in the Barak Valley would be considered an important step towards preserving the memory of the great commander of the Ahom army.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma then laid the foundation stone of the integrated DC office complex at Ghungur at a cost of Rs 48 crore. The chief minister also laid the foundation stone for a new convention centre to be built in Shilkuri on the same day.
After this, the Chief Minister inaugurated 75 water supply schemes simultaneously under the Jal Jeevan Mission while participating in the fifth aquatic conference held at the District Sports Association ground. The Chief Minister also laid the foundation stone for the work of upgrading 21 km of Silchar-Kaline road to a four-lane road worth Rs 210 crore under the Assam Mala Project.
During the meeting, the Chief Minister announced several new projects for the development of Cachar district. According to the chief minister’s announcement, another pucca bridge will be constructed at Shilghat in Silchar on the Barak river. The Chief Minister also announced that another new pucca bridge would be constructed at Madhuraghat in Silchar to connect Silchar and Dudhpatil.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the people of Barak are very happy with the delimitation. Referring to speculation that former Silchar MLA Dilip Pal, who has been suspended from the BJP, will be brought back into the party fold, the Chief Minister said that Dilip Pal has already applied for a return to the BJP.
The Chief Minister said that the government is making efforts to build three new flyovers to free Silchar city from traffic congestion. A flyover from Ramnagar to Trunkroad, a 3 km long flyover, another flyover from 2.3 km long capital point to Rangirkhari, as well as a feasibility study for the construction of an elevator overbridge of 1 km length on Tarapur Shibbari Road, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.
