Assam Electricity Crisis: CM meets Union Power Minister in New Delhi; Assam to get 300 MW of electricity

New Delhi: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met with Union Power Minister RK Singh in New Delhi on September 8, 2023 to discuss the state’s electricity crisis. During the meeting, the Union Minister agreed to provide Assam with an additional 300 MW of electricity from the central grid. This will help to alleviate the power shortage in the state, which has been exacerbated by the recent heat wave.

The Chief Minister also requested the Union Minister to expedite the completion of the ongoing power projects in Assam. These projects include the 160 MW solar power project in Bongaigaon, the 120 MW solar power project in Lakwa, and the 70 MW solar power project in Karbi Anglong. The Union Minister assured the Chief Minister that all these projects will be completed in a timely manner.

In addition to the additional power supply from the central grid, the Assam government is also taking steps to improve the state’s own power generation capacity. The government has recently awarded contracts for the construction of two new thermal power plants in Assam, with a combined capacity of 1,200 MW. These plants are expected to be completed in the next few years.

The Assam government is also working to improve the efficiency of its power distribution network. The government has recently launched a program to replace old and outdated power lines and transformers. This program is expected to reduce power losses and improve the reliability of the power supply in the state.

The steps taken by the Assam government and the Union government are expected to help to alleviate the state’s electricity crisis. However, it is important to note that these measures will take some time to implement. In the meantime, the state government has assured the people of Assam that they will do everything possible to ensure a reliable and uninterrupted power supply.
