IIT Guwahati is ranked sixth overall in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2023 for Sustainable Development Goal 7 (Affordable and clean energy). With reference to the UN-mandated Sustainable Development Goals, universities are ranked according to these global performance tables. Along with its exceptional achievement in Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7, IIT Guwahati has made notable progress in other SDGs. The institute presently ranks among the top 200 universities for SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), even if its overall ranking increased to 401–600 in 2023.

IIT Guwahati has also demonstrated its commitment to SDGs 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), and 14 (Life Below Water), reiterating its standing as a leading institution dedicated to sustainability. IIT Guwahati stated on Twitter that according to the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2023 for Sustainable Development Goal 7 (Affordable and clean energy), IIT Guwahati is ranked sixth globally. As required by the UN, these rankings are global performance tables that evaluate universities in relation to those goals.

The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings are the only global performance tables that assess universities in connection to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations, according to the official website for the 2023 edition.

The aggregate ranking for the fifth iteration of the Impact Rankings for 2023 includes 1,591 universities from 112 different countries and regions.

In addition, IIT Guwahati started the Green Campus Initiative, provided startup funding to help sustainable businesses get off the ground, started projects centered on sustainable water technologies, and helped to advance the creation of sustainable materials for trash recycling. On the other hand, in March, the most recent edition of the most widely recognized university ranking lists Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati as one of the top universities in the world for the study of 14 subjects.
