Guwahati: The Centre’s announcement on Tuesday on slashing the prices of LPG for all domestic consumers by Rs 200 ahead of the festive season has given a major relief to the consumers, who are already burdened with the price hike in essential commodities, vegetables, electricity, medicine and fuel.
Soon after the announcement of the decision by Union minister Anurag Thakur before the media, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “What a wonderful Rakhi gift for our sisters! Rs 200 savings on LPG prices will not only enhance household savings, but also have a multiplier effect on the overall economy.
The decision reaffirms that empathy and empowerment are the two defining attributes of Prime Minister Narendra Modi governance.” Rakhi Purnima will be celebrated on Wednesday.
The change in prices of domestic LPG refills has come after 5 months 29 days. The price of the 14.2 kg refills was hiked by Rs 50 on March 1. A domestic LPG refill was priced at Rs 757 in May 2019, just before the swearing-in of Narendra Modi as Prime Minister for the second consecutive term in Guwahati. The domestic LPG refills witnessed an increase of Rs 395 till Tuesday, before the cut in prices, since May 2019.
In Assam, Cachar, Dima Hasao and Karimganj are the districts where the prices of 14.2 kg domestic LPG refill will be over Rs 1,000 even after the cut in prices whereas the LPG for domestic use will be cheaper in Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Sivasagar and Golaghat districts.
“The price of LPG varies from district to district. It is because of the transportation cost. Price remains a little bit higher in the districts, which are far from bottling plants, and cheaper in those districts which are closer,” an official from Indian Oil said.
