No fault found on part of police in killing of Atiq Ahmad, his brother: UP tells SC

Digital Desk: The Uttar Pradesh government has told the Supreme Court that no fault was found on the part of the police in the killing of gangster Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf. The government said that the police had acted in self-defense after they were fired upon by Ahmad and his brother.

The government’s response came in an affidavit filed in the Supreme Court in response to a plea by Ahmad’s wife, Shaista Parveen. Parveen had alleged that her husband and brother-in-law were killed in a fake encounter by the police.

The government’s affidavit said that the police had received a tip-off that Ahmad and his brother were planning to attack a police team. The police then laid a trap and when Ahmad and his brother arrived, they fired upon the police. The police then fired back in self-defense, killing Ahmad and his brother.

Ahmad (60) and Ashraf were shot dead at point-blank range by three men posing as journalists while police personnel were escorting them to a medical college for examination on April 15. The entire shooting was captured live on national television.

The government’s affidavit also said that a magisterial inquiry had been conducted into the incident and the inquiry had found no fault on the part of the police.

The Supreme Court is yet to hear the plea by Ahmad’s wife.

The case of Atiq Ahmad’s killing has been controversial, with many people alleging that it was a fake encounter. The government’s affidavit that no fault was found on the part of the police is likely to further fuel the controversy.

It is important to note that the government’s affidavit is just one side of the story. The Supreme Court will hear the plea by Ahmad’s wife and will then decide whether or not to order a further investigation into the incident.
