In a shocking incident that unfolded on Tuesday afternoon, the peaceful neighborhood of Kharguli in Guwahati was plunged into chaos and destruction as a high-pressure water pipe burst, unleashing a torrential deluge of water.
The incident took place around 3 p.m., causing panic and chaos among the local residents. Over 600 individuals were directly impacted by the water gush, with around 40 individuals sustaining injuries. The injured were swiftly transported to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention.
Sumitra Rabha was the only person murdered in the tragedy. She lived in one of the homes where the water surged and ruined. The injured were taken care of in the meantime by being taken to the local hospitals.
The burst led to the sweeping away of numerous vehicles and the destruction of approximately 40 houses.
The pipeline is maintained by Gammon India JICA. The manhole located in the middle of a hilly road was created to carry out the welding works to lay the pipeline. The work was executed by Gammon Engineers and Contractors Private Limited. The pipeline was laid around five years ago and the manhole was closed down through welding around three years ago.
The water supply would be quickly restored, according to the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA). However, those who were impacted by the tragedy have expressed their outrage and unhappiness. For the harm done to their property, they have claimed reimbursement from the GMDA.
