Sydney’s Harris Park renamed ‘Little India’ during PM Modi’s visit to Australia

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese on Tuesday officially named Sydney’s Harris Park area in Parramatta as ‘Little India’ during a special community event for the Indian diaspora. Addressing the event, PM Modi thanked his “friend” Albanese for the “special honour” and asked the Indian community members to take the Australian PM to taste Indian chaat and sweets.

Harris Park is a hub in Western Sydney where the Indian community celebrates festivals and events such as Diwali and Australia Day. The first proposal for officially naming the area ‘Little India’ was made in 2015.

When the two Prime Ministers arrived at the venue, PM Modi was given a traditional welcome. The event began with cultural performance by Indian dancers.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Tuesday called his counterpart Prime Minister Narendra Modi “the boss” while addressing the community event in Sydney for the Indian diaspora. Albanese’s remark came as he compared the crowd for PM Modi to legendary rockstar Bruce Springsteen – who is incidentally known as “The Boss” among his fans.

In his introductory remarks, Mr Albanese referred to the vast audience and compared PM Modi’s popularity to that of legendary rockstar Bruce Springsteen, who is also known by fans as “The Boss”.

“The last time I saw someone on this stage was Bruce Springsteen and he did not get the welcome that Prime Minister Modi has got. Prime Minister Modi is The Boss,” said the Australian PM, drawing a grin from the Prime Minister and cheering and applause from the tens of thousands gathered at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney.
