Water level of Brahmaputra river rises due to heavy rains in Assam

The flood situation in Assam remained grim as water levels continued to rise following incessant rains. The downpours inundated new areas in 10 districts and affected over 38,000 people.Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Biswanath Chariali, Lakhimpur, Darrang, Hojai, Nagaon, Sonitpur, Tinsukia and Udalguri are among the districts affected by the first wave of floods this year.

Heavy rainfall has led to overflowing rivers, submerging villages, and displacing residents. Crops, livestock, and infrastructure have been destroyed, disrupting normal life. Rescue and relief operations are underway, with authorities working to evacuate affected individuals to safer areas.

The highest, 25,275 people, have been hit in upper Assam’s Lakhimpur district, followed by 3,857 in Dibrugarh and 3,631 in Biswanath sub-division in northern Assam’s Sonitpur district.

The state government is providing essential supplies and medical aid to the affected population. The situation remains critical as efforts continue to mitigate the impact of the devastating floods in Assam.

Meanwhile, Union health minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya chaired a virtual meeting with central and state agencies to review public health preparedness.

Mandaviya on Saturday directed the health department officials to prepare an online database listing important information such as availability of beds, oxygen and other health facilities to ensure efficient management of any health emergency during Assam floods.
